Young Patients and Esthetic Implant Outcomes (Time = half day)

Teenagers and young adults represent a large and growing segment of potential single implant patients. The majority of young patients are seeking implant care in the esthetic zone primarily due to congenital absence and trauma. With proper treatment planning and collaboration between members of the implant team, young patients can avoid the ravages of conventional dental procedures and ensure long term functional and esthetic success. In addition to the oral surgeon, periodontist and restorative dentist, the orthodontist and pediatric dentist are key team members in the treatment of young patients. This presentation includes guidelines for treating young patients with single implants including appropriate age and maturity, cost and value of implant treatment, and clinical examples highlighting long term results.

  • Understand the role of implants in young patients
  • Manage an interdisciplinary approach for young patients

  • Achieve optimal spacing for single implants in the esthetic zone
  • Use provisional restorations for retention of implant space
The Esthetic Challenge of Adjacent Implants (Time = half day)

Protocols for adjacent implants in the esthetic zone are considerably different from those of single tooth restorations. The challenge is to create the illusion of natural gingival architecture between implants. This discussion explores treatment planning concepts, leading-edge techniques and implant designs to achieve optimal results for partially edentulous patients. Clinical examples demonstrate implant placement and spacing guidelines, soft tissue development, prosthetic alternatives when ideal tissue form is not achievable and restorative protocols that maximize esthetic potential.

  • Understand the esthetic challenge of adjacent iimplants in the esthetic zone
  • Use the rule of 3x3x3 PIE for optimal adjacent implant placement
  • Develop soft tissue between adjacent implants with provisional restorations
  • Identify new implant components, designed for osseous and soft tissue preservation

Treatment Planning for Complex Implant Restorations (Time = half day)

The implant team's unified vision of the optimal result is the first and most important step to consistently predictable outcomes for complex implant restorations. Oral and digital communication and a diagnostic waxing are critical tools in establishing the anticipated restoration. This vision is achieved through meticulous treatment planning and coordination and then followed by a well-planned sequence of treatment phases. A detail treatment coordination form used by all team members, including the patient, to achieve this goal is demonstrated. Implant placement, predicated upon the restorative plan, is accomplished through accurate conventionally designed or CT navigated surgical guides. The prosthodontist or restorative dentist must be closely involved with the laboratory and objectively communicate with the technicians in each phase of the restorative process through a methodical system of checks and balances. Dr. Priest will demonstrate these essential principles of complex implant treatment through patient examples and a review of his own long term results.

  • Identify explicit methods of treatment planning and coordination between team members
  • Select and design prostheses for complex treatment scenarios
  • Institute tangle methods of communication and involvement with the dental laboratory

Implants for Edentulous Mandibles: A Blueprint for Success (Time = half day)

Brånemark envisioned his concept of dental implants to solve the dilemma of unstable and uncomfortable lower dentures. Twenty years later, implants have become the standard of care for these once compromised patients. We will examine fixed and removable implant solutions that can accommodate any patient's need and budget. A review of technical procedures will elucidate the advantages of the many available choices, including CAD/CAM bars and attachments for removable prostheses and hybrid frameworks and metal ceramic fixed prostheses. Cost and time considerations will be compared for complete dentures, implant overdentures and fixed implant prostheses.

  • Select the most appropriate implant option for edentulous mandible
  • Prescribe optimal implant numbers and locations for different types of prostheses
  • Appropriate use of and procedural guide for hybrid fixed prostheses

Contemporary Treatment Concepts for Implant Rehabilitation of Edentulous Maxillae (Time = half day)

Implants have significantly altered treatment concepts for edentulous maxillae and have given edentulous patients new hope for functional rehabilitation. Current literature is used to prescribe optimal implant numbers and distribution for maximum longevity and comfort. Removable and fixed alternatives which provide favorable choices based on cost, esthetics and function are explored. Specifically, Dr. Priest will detail protocols for attachment and bar retained overdentures using traditional and CAD/CAM components, followed by fixed restorations using ceramics, resins, and gingival colored materials. This interactive discussion will include step-by-step guidelines for treatment planning and fabrication of functional and esthetic prostheses for edentulous patients.

  • Select the most appropriate implant option for edentulous maxillae
  • Prescribe optimal implant numbers and locations for different types of prostheses
  • Use of CAD/CAM frameworks for optimal fit precision
  • Design fixed prostheses and the use of gingival-colored ceramics

Contemporary Treatment Options for Edentulous Patients (Time = half day or full day)

Technological breakthroughs in implant dentistry have significantly altered treatment concepts for edentulous patients and have given these patients superior prospects for functional and esthetic rehabilitation. This discussion will highlight contemporary designs for fixed and removable prostheses for edentulous mandibles and maxillae. Clinical examples and video segments will demonstrate computer-guided surgery for expedited and accurate prosthetically driven placement; CAD/CAM designed and manufactured frameworks that are precise and durable; and improved resins and ceramics for stronger and more lifelike tooth replacements. The impact of these advancements on clinical practice represents a significant development in enhancing implant treatment outcomes for edentulous patients.

Objectives:

  • Selection criteria for complete dentures, removable and fixed implant prostheses for edentulous patients
  • Prescribe optimal implant numbers and locations for different types of prostheses
  • Use of contemporary resins and ceramics for teeth and characterization of artificial giniva

The objectives of these new technologies are to simplify and enhance clinical and laboratory procedures, reduce chairtime and treatment duration, increase durability of implant prostheses and ultimately to improve patient care.

Soft-tissue development with provisional and definitive implant restorations (Time = half day or full day)

This presentation details methods of optimizing sulcular implant form using chairside and laboratory fabricated provisional restorations either as part of immediate implant placement or following surgical uncovering. Step-by-step clinical examples and videos feature provisional restoration techniques. Subgingival contours of provisional and definitive restorations that profoundly affect sulcular and papilla form are clearly explained. Esthetically pleasing provisional restorations are part of the evolving implant esthetic continuum, providing a scaffold for soft-tissue development that can be evaluated by the implant surgeon, restorative dentist and patient.

ESTHETIC DENTISTRY

Integration implants with teeth, crowns and veneers for esthetic balance (Time = half day or full day)

Due to tooth loss, failure of conventional prostheses and congenital absence, implant treatment is now a standard treatment protocol for tooth replacement in the esthetic zone. The challenge for the implant team becomes creating hard and soft tissue balance between implants and adjacent restored and unrestored teeth. Today's presentation is designed to guide the team to predictable methods of seamlessly integrating implants with the surrounding hard and soft tissues. Specific discussion areas include treatment planning the varied combinations of restorations, surgical guides for optimal implant placement and spacing for proportionate restorations, symmetrical soft tissue profiles through soft tissue development procedures, and abutment and restoration materials that facilitate shade and contour matching.

  • Learn advantages of implants over fixed dental prostheses in the esthetic zone
  • Design conventional and computed navigated surgical guides for optimal single and multiple implant placement
  • Make provisional restorations that balances periimplant soft tissue with that of the surrounding teeth
  • Create proportionate restorations by calculating ideal tooth dimensions
  • Select restorative materials that facilitate shade matching between dissimilar restorations while providing life-like optical properties

Progressive Veneer Techniques for Optimal Esthetics (Time = half day or full day)

Ceramic veneers are the foundation of the esthetically-oriented practice. They are conservative options for esthetic enhancement that can significantly change a patient's appearance. Materials and techniques have evolved that simplify restorative procedures and maximize esthetic results. Dr. Priest will examine indications, effective tooth preparation, luting techniques, and esthetic tooth arrangements for specific patient types. He will also recommend supplies and materials that have proven to be effective. Techniques for avoiding common problems of preparation are demonstrated, and the close association between tooth preparation and prosthetic excellence are emphasized.

  • Prepare teeth for veneers conservatively while providing maximum esthetics
  • Fabricate provisional veneers that provide the blueprint for definitive restorations
  • Cement veneers using a sequence for predictable long-term retention

Smile Line Revitalization with Crowns, Veneers and Implants (Time = half day)

Dentists are often challenged to provide esthetically pleasing smiles to patients with missing teeth or teeth compromised by dental carries, wear, erosion or pernicious habits. The goal is to preserve remaining tooth structure and prevent further breakdown. However, dentists are also presented with the opportunity to not only restore, but to enhance these patients' dental esthetics. The sequential treatment steps of smile line rehabilitation are largely influenced by the anticipated esthetic results. Topics of discussion include the influence of esthetics on jaw relations, diagnostic waxing, provisional restorations as the esthetic template, and sequential restoration techniques that simplify the process of complete rehabilitation. Treatment plans involving combinations of crowns, veneers and implant restorations are presented.

  • List current techniques of crown restoration
  • Demonstrate the advantages of progressive veneer preparation
  • Recognize the potential of implants in the esthetic zone
  • Develop treatment planning with combinations of crowns, veneers and implants
